Home Care Services in Charlotte, NC – Traveling Offers New Challenges and Unfamiliar Surroundings
Clara was planning a trip for her family and she wanted to make sure that her 86-year-old mother would be able to go along with them. They were going to be traveling 500 miles by car to their special vacation destination. They were going to be gone for almost 2 weeks, which meant that there were going to be almost 14 overnight stays at various hotels between home and their destination.
At the time, Claire wasn’t thinking much about what type of assistance her mother was going to require. She wasn’t relying on home care services at this point in time because Clara was there for her as often as possible.
However, once the trip began, especially on that first night in the hotel it became clear that her mother was going to require some level of assistance throughout the night. Her mother was not used to the layout and even though the bathroom was handicap accessible, she had great difficulty stepping into the tub and taking a shower.
There was no shower seat in the hotel, even though Clara had asked if they provided these upon request. However, once they arrived at the hotel to check in, the hotel manager informed her that they did not have any available at that time, but that he would check to see if one would be available later on.
At the second hotel, it was a very similar situation and Clara ended up spending a majority of her time, her downtime when she wasn’t out with her children and husband, trying to make sure that her mother was safe and had everything she needed, especially during the overnight hours.
When you are planning a trip with an elderly family member, even though he or she doesn’t require an in-home care provider at this point in time, that doesn’t mean they might not benefit by having overnight assistance in the hotel or at your vacation destination.
Keep in mind that a person gets used to their home, the layout, and the facilities that they have. If they are placed in a foreign environment, it can complicate situations very quickly. As Clara discovered, hiring an overnight in-home care provider for her mother on this vacation would’ve allowed her to enjoy her time much more than she managed. It would’ve also provided more comfort to her mother on this trip.
