Do not overstress them or encourage them to do so much that they put themselves in danger of injury, but also discourage them from always relying on the wheelchair when they are able to move. Encourage your parent to transfer to a walker whenever possible, even if it is only for a few steps, or to get a bit of a workout by transferring from the wheelchair, with brakes secured, to a chair and back again a few times.
